Short answer… if you have a camera, It’s Good Enough. The rub to our Gear obsession lies in the fact that it can always be better.
Recently, I’ve decided to go through my old archives and see how far back my photo obsession developed. In doing this, I stumbled upon something I hadn’t really thought about much. Likely due to my own gear head mentality. But it is quite impressive what we can do with old tech.
The image above was shot with a Nikon Coolpix E3200, a near 10 year old point and shoot, rocking about 3MP. This was taken back in 2004 while vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was a chilly November morning and the snow on the mountain was something to behold. Nothing special, just a deck, tasty cup of joe, good company and the view.
Now, its certainly not tack sharp and oh so pixel-peeperish, but I think its still a very pleasing piece. This bad boy did take some adjusting in Lightroom, so there was certainly some restoration to do. The big thing to remember though, is that you don’t need the best gear to create artwork that will please the eyes. Just the camera you some level pulling in your desired editor.
Gear matters…. just not as much as we would like to think it does.
Just another example, a Mayan Temple from Altun Ha. Taken with a Digital Elph SD1000.
